What is the electronic Tanzania visa (e-Visa)?
The Tanzania e-Visa is a visa issued online by the Tanzania Immigration Services Department. You apply and pay online and receive a Visa Grant Notice by e-mail, so there is no need to visit an embassy or consulate. The ordinary tourist visa is a single-entry visa that permits a stay of up to 90 days. One visa covers both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

Types of Tanzania visa
Tanzania Immigration Services issues six types of visa. The ones most travellers need are:
- Ordinary (single-entry) visa, for tourism, holidays, visiting family or friends, or attending a meeting or workshop. It permits a stay of up to 90 days.
- Multiple-entry visa, valid for one year. Citizens of the United States who travel for tourism must apply for this visa instead of the ordinary visa, even for a single trip.
- Transit visa, for travellers passing through Tanzania on the way to another country. It permits a stay of up to 7 days and is not meant for tourism.
- Business visa, for short business assignments of up to 90 days.
The other two types are the student visa and the gratis visa for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports.
Tanzania eVisa requirements
To apply for a Tanzania e-Visa online you need:
- a passport valid for at least six months with at least one unused visa page,
- a copy of your passport bio-data page and a recent colour photo,
- a return ticket, or for a transit visa an onward ticket and, where required, a visa for your next destination,
- an active e-mail address where your Visa Grant Notice will be sent,
- a valid payment method (credit or debit card, or another accepted method).

Who needs a visa to Tanzania?
Citizens of most countries need a visa to enter Tanzania. Nationals of the East African Community, most SADC countries and most Commonwealth countries do not, but citizens of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Nigeria do. Every traveller needs their own visa, including children. A visa does not guarantee entry: the immigration officer at the point of entry makes the final decision.

Important things to know before you apply
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months and have at least one unused visa page.
- You must show a return ticket on arrival in Tanzania.
- Every traveller needs their own visa, including children and infants.
- The ordinary visa covers tourism, visiting family or friends and attending meetings. It does not permit work or business activity.
- One visa covers both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
- Depending on your itinerary, you may also need to complete the online Traveller's Health Surveillance Form before arrival. Check the current requirement before you travel.
- Make sure every detail matches your passport exactly. Incorrect information can cause delays or refusal.
- A visa does not guarantee entry. The immigration officer at the point of entry makes the final decision.

How long does it take to get a Tanzania eVisa?
Tanzania Immigration Services processes applications within ten days. We recommend applying at least two weeks before your planned departure. Nationals of countries in the referral category, whose applications need prior approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration, should apply at least two months before travelling.
Can I get a visa to Tanzania on arrival?
Nationals of many countries can also get a visa on arrival at official entry points. Tanzania Immigration Services recommends applying online in advance, which lets you travel with an approved visa and avoid queues at the border.
How will I receive the Tanzania eVisa?
Once your application is approved, your Visa Grant Notice is sent to the e-mail address you provided. Print it out or keep a digital copy to show on arrival.
How long is a Tanzania visa valid for?
The ordinary visa permits a stay of up to 90 days. The transit visa permits a stay of up to 7 days. The multiple-entry visa, which US citizens travelling as tourists must use, is valid for one year.
Can I visit Zanzibar with a Tanzania visa?
Yes. One visa covers both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. When you apply, select the place you will arrive first.
